Three clever doctors who were very good at fixing things were traveling around the world. They stopped at a nice inn to spend the night. The innkeeper asked where they came from and where they were going. They told him they were traveling and practicing their special skills. The innkeeper said, "Show me just once what you can do." The first doctor said he would cut off his hand and put it back on by morning. The second said he would take out his heart and put it back in by morning. The third said he would take out his eyes and heal them again by morning. The innkeeper said, "If you can do that, you really are the best." But they had a magic cream. They rubbed it on themselves, and it made their cuts heal fast. They always carried a small bottle with the magic cream in it.

Then they cut off the hand, the heart, and the eyes, just as they promised. They put them all on a plate and gave it to the innkeeper. The innkeeper gave the plate to a servant girl to keep safe in the cupboard. But the girl had a secret boyfriend who was a soldier. When everyone in the house was fast asleep, the soldier woke up and was hungry. The girl opened the cupboard and brought him some food. She was so happy to see him that she forgot to close the door. She sat down at the table with her lover and they talked softly together.

The cat crept in quietly. The cupboard was open. The cat took the hand, the heart, and the eyes of the three army surgeons. It ran away with them. The soldier finished his food. The girl put the dishes away and closed the cupboard. She looked at the plate the innkeeper gave her. It was empty. She was very scared. She said to her lover, "Oh no! What will I do? The hand is gone. The heart and the eyes are gone too. What will happen in the morning?" Her lover smiled gently. "Do not worry," he said. "I will help you. There is a thief hanging on the gallows outside. I will cut off his hand." "Which hand?" she asked. "The right one," he answered.

Then the girl gave him a sharp knife. He went and cut off the poor man's right hand. He brought it to her. After that, he caught the cat and took out its eyes. Now, only the heart was missing. "Have you been working hard?" asked the soldier. "Are the dead pigs in the cellar ready?" "Yes," said the girl. "That is fine," said the soldier. He went down and fetched a pig's heart. The girl put the hand, heart, and eyes on a plate. She put it in the cupboard. When her lover took leave of her, she went quietly to bed. In the morning, the three army surgeons got up. They told the girl she was to bring them the plate with the hand, heart, and eyes.

Then she brought it out of the cupboard. The first doctor fixed the thief's hand and put a special cream on it. His hand grew back right away. The second doctor took the cat's eyes and put them in his own head. The third doctor fixed the pig's heart in the place where his own heart used to be. The innkeeper watched them with big eyes. He was amazed by their magic. He said he had never seen such a thing before. He promised to tell everyone how wonderful they were. Then they paid for their food and left. As they walked down the road, the doctor with the pig's heart did not want to walk. He ran to every corner and dug in the dirt with his nose, just like a pig. His friends tried to pull him back by his coat, but he did not listen.

He pulled his arm free and ran into the softest dirt he could find. The second soldier acted very strangely, too. He rubbed his sleepy eyes and asked his friends, "What happened? These aren't my eyes. I can't see at all. Please, will one of you lead me so I don't fall?" With great care, they walked on until evening. They found another inn and went inside. There, in the corner, a rich man sat at a table counting his money. The soldier with the thief's hand walked around him. He made a few quick, jerky movements with his arm. When the stranger turned away, the soldier snatched a big handful of money. One of them saw this and said, "Friend, what are you doing? You must not steal. That is wrong." "But what can I do?" he asked.

My hand started to twitch, and I could not stop myself from grabbing things. After that, they lay down to sleep. It was so dark that no one could see his own hand. All at once, the one with the cat's eyes woke up and woke the others. He said, "Brothers, just look up. Do you see the white mice running about there?" The two sat up, but they could see nothing. Then he said, "Something is not right with us. We have not got back what is ours. We must go back to the innkeeper. He tricked us." So, they went back the next morning. They told the host that they had not received what was theirs. The first one had a thief's hand, the second had cat's eyes, and the third had a pig's heart.

The innkeeper said the girl must be to blame for the mess. He wanted to call her, but when he saw the three strange men coming, she ran out the back door and did not come back. Then the three men told him he must give them a lot of money, or they would set the red rooster on his roof. The red rooster is a special sign for fire. He gave them all the money he had, and whatever he could find. The three men took the money and went away. They had enough money to live the rest of their lives, but they would have rather had their own healthy bodies back.

"Three clever doctors who were very good at fixing things were traveling around the world. They stopped at a nice inn to spend the night. The innkeeper asked where they came from and where they were going. They told him they were traveling and practicing their special skills. The innkeeper said, \"Show me just once what you can do.\" The first doctor said he would cut off his hand and put it back on by morning. The second said he would take out his heart and put it back in by morning. The third said he would take out his eyes and heal them again by morning. The innkeeper said, \"If you can do that, you really are the best.\" But they had a magic cream. They rubbed it on themselves, and it made their cuts heal fast. They always carried a small bottle with the magic cream in it.",
"Then they cut off the hand, the heart, and the eyes, just as they promised. She sat down at the table with her lover and they talked softly together.",
"The cat crept in quietly. The cupboard was open. The cat took the hand, the heart, and the eyes of the three army surgeons. It ran away with them. The soldier finished his food. The girl put the dishes away and closed the cupboard. She looked at the plate the innkeeper gave her. It was empty. She was very scared. She said to her lover, \"Oh no! What will I do? The hand is gone. The heart and the eyes are gone too. What will happen in the morning?\" Her lover smiled gently. \"Do not worry,\" he said. \"I will help you. There is a thief hanging on the gallows outside. I will cut off his hand.\" \"Which hand?\" she asked. \"The right one,\" he answered.",
"Then the girl gave him a sharp knife. He went and cut off the poor man's right hand. He brought it to her. After that, he caught the cat and took out its eyes. Now, only the heart was missing. \"Have you been working hard?\" asked the soldier. \"Are the dead pigs in the cellar ready?\" \"Yes,\" said the girl. \"That is fine,\" said the soldier. He went down and fetched a pig's heart. The girl put the hand, heart, and eyes on a plate. She put it in the cupboard. When her lover took leave of her, she went quietly to bed. In the morning, the three army surgeons got up. They told the girl she was to bring them the plate with the hand, heart, and eyes.",
"Then she brought it out of the cupboard. His friends tried to pull him back by his coat, but he did not listen.",
"He pulled his arm free and ran into the softest dirt he could find. The second soldier acted very strangely, too. He rubbed his sleepy eyes and asked his friends, \"What happened? These aren't my eyes. I can't see at all. Please, will one of you lead me so I don't fall?\" With great care, they walked on until evening. They found another inn and went inside. There, in the corner, a rich man sat at a table counting his money. The soldier with the thief's hand walked around him. He made a few quick, jerky movements with his arm. When the stranger turned away, the soldier snatched a big handful of money. One of them saw this and said, \"Friend, what are you doing? You must not steal. That is wrong.\" \"But what can I do?\" he asked.",
"My hand started to twitch, and I could not stop myself from grabbing things. After that, they lay down to sleep. It was so dark that no one could see his own hand. All at once, the one with the cat's eyes woke up and woke the others. He said, \"Brothers, just look up. Do you see the white mice running about there?\" The two sat up, but they could see nothing. Then he said, \"Something is not right with us. We have not got back what is ours. We must go back to the innkeeper. He tricked us.\" So, they went back the next morning. They told the host that they had not received what was theirs. The first one had a thief's hand, the second had cat's eyes, and the third had a pig's heart.",
"The innkeeper said the girl must be to blame for the mess. They had enough money to live the rest of their lives, but they would have rather had their own healthy bodies back."

The innkeeper said, \"Show me just once what you can do.\" The first doctor said he would cut off his hand and put it back on by morning. They always carried a small bottle with the magic cream in it.\n\nThen they cut off the hand, the heart, and the eyes, just as they promised.
